Affordable Housing

Affordable housing is housing that costs no more than 30% of your gross household income (your total income before taxes and deductions). This helps low and moderate-income families afford other essentials like food, clothing, and utilities. It includes public housing, subsidized housing, and housing provided by non-profit organizations.

Where can I find affordable housing?

Affordable housing can be found through local housing authorities, non-profit organizations, and government programs.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility requirements typically include having an income below a certain threshold, which is usually a percentage of the area median income (AMI). This threshold varies depending on the area and the household size. Specific requirements can vary, so it's important to check with local housing authorities or HUD for detailed information.

In Need of Shelter?

  • If you are unhoused and in need of shelter, call 2-1-1 or 800-203-1234. You may be placed on a waitlist if a shelter bed is not immediately available.

  • For Domestic Violence Survivors: The Domestic Violence Crisis Center (DVCC) provides safe, temporary housing for victims (18+) of abuse and their children. Housing Rights and Laws

  • The Rights and Responsibilities of Landlords and Tenants are outlined in the State Statutes. These laws cover leases, repairs, late fees, security deposits, evictions, etc. The Full State Law is within Chapter 830.
  • In Connecticut, you have the right to fair housing. This means that you have the right to choose where to live, to raise a family, and to own a home without fear of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, national origin, disability, family status, pregnancy age, ancestry, marital status, sexual orientation, or lawful source of income.
    • If you or another person are experiencing housing discrimination, contact the Connecticut Fair Housing Center at 860-247-4400 or go to their website
