Our Environmental Inspections Division routinely obtains water samples from local beaches and recreational shellfish beds to monitor water quality. Additional beach status information can be found on the Department of Health and Human Services hotline at 203-977-5889 Ext. 2.

Beaches

Beaches are sampled weekly during the summer season to monitor water quality and may be closed occasionally due to poor water quality and/or heavy rainfall. When the beach is closed, it may be closed just because the water quality is poor and swimming isn't allowed. You may, however, still sit on the sand away from water.

When beaches are open, it's still possible to develop a rash from cercarial dermatitis, also known as swimmer's itch, from swimming or wading in the water. You can prevent swimmer's itch by toweling off or showering immediately after swimming. For more information on swimmer's itch, check out this CDC webpage.

Current Beach Status: CLOSED for swimming and shoreline activities 2024 BEACH SEASON.
