When the Mayor declares a Snow Emergency, this means that larger amounts of snow are predicted and cars are to be removed from Snow Emergency Streets. Those streets are marked with red and white signs.  You can find a link to those roads by clicking HERE.  

All city garages will be open and free to residents for the duration of the Snow Emergency. City garages are located at:

• Bedford Street Garage - 17 Forest Street
• Bell Street Garage - 28 Bell Street
• Summer Street Garage - 100 Summer Street

The COVID-19 pandemic has closed many of the community partners that typically volunteer to serve as Warming Centers.The Stamford Government Center lobby remains open for warming.

Residents in need of accessing a warming center are reminded that they can enjoy public access locations such as the Stamford Town Center and the Ferguson Library branches, as alternative warming sites.  Please call ahead (or check their web site) for information on their availability as COVID-19 restrictions may alter their typical service procedures and operating hours.

If you need to get out of the cold outside of those hours, please dial 211 (800-203-1234 for out of state) for emergency shelter. 

The City of Stamford Operations Department oversees the snow plowing of City streets.  Roads are pre-treated when large storms are expected and crews begin plowing as soon as conditions warrant. Further information regarding Stamford's snow plowing plan can be found HERE.  

As you prepare to clear your driveway, keep in mind that the snow plow may return and push snow and ice back up onto your driveway. City plows are unable to "lift" the plow to avoid your driveway or return to remove snow that may have been pushed back.  We realize this may duplicate your efforts, but it is unavoidable as we make roads safe for travel.  Shoveling your snow to the right hand side (as you look out to the street) may prevent most of your work being "plowed in".

The City plows the streets by prioritizing emergency routes. If your street has not been plowed 10 hours after the final snowfall of a major storm, you can submit a request to Fix it Stamford HERE. 

It is the responsibility of the Superintendent to determine whether there is a delayed opening, an early dismissal, a school closure, or a regular school day during winter weather. Delayed openings will always be two hours and early release will follow the early release schedule for the respective school a student attends.

Once it is determined by the Superintendent that there will be a change in the normal operation of the school, a notification will be sent out to families. The earliest notifications will be posted on the Stamford Public Schools website, the Superintendent's twitter account @SPSSuper, and local media. Depending on the time and strength of a winter storm, the residential garbage and recycling schedule could potentially be impacted. When collection is canceled, a notice will be posted on the Recycling and Sanitation department page.

Please clear snow to the curb in order for your garbage and recycling bins to be accessible for city collection crews. Bins should not be hidden behind snow banks to ensure that your bin is not missed. 

Due to winter storms, residents should anticipate COVID-19 testing and vaccine sites may close.
