Residents should prepare an emergency kit and make sure they are well stocked on the crucial items including:

• One gallon of water per person per day
• Nonperishable food
• Hand operated can opener
• Flashlight
• Battery-powered radio
• Prescription drugs
• Eyeglasses
• Small hand tools
• Blankets
• Pillows
• Towels/ Toiletries

If your property has flooded, promptly report the loss to your insurance agent or company. An insurance adjuster will be assigned to work with you throughout the claims process. The adjuster will call to set up a time to inspect your property in-person or remotely within a few days. Ask if you can get an advance payment. Those without flood insurance can potentially apply for a FEMA grant, however, they must wait for the State of Connecticut to apply for a disaster declaration and the President to approve the declaration.

The federal government provides grants (through FEMA) and loans (through the SBA) that may help you repair flood damage to your home, as well as cover certain other expenses.

The City of Stamford is working with the State of Connecticut, CT Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (DEMHS) on an Initial Damage Assessment (IDA) for both Tropical Storm Henri and the remnants of Hurricane Ida to ascertain FEMA Financial Assistance for residents impacted. 

In order to determine if the damages from these events meet the criteria for federal disaster assistance programs, DEMHS is asking all municipalities and tribal nations to report damages including residential and business damages.

If your home or business sustained damage from either TS Henri or Ida, please take the following steps:

• Document damages for each storm event

• Contact your insurance company to determine if the damages are covered by your policy

• Take photos of damages

• Keep receipts for repairs/costs

• Report details on the damages, provide photos, insurance information and your contact information to the City of Stamford to assist us in the application process.

How a disaster gets declared (from FEMA web site):

1. The state identifies a disaster.
2. A damage assessment is made.
3. State government officials review the damage and determine the extent of the disaster and its impact.
4. The Governor decides if the state has enough resources to respond to the disaster.
5. If not, they determine the type and amount of federal assistance they need.
6. The state submits a major disaster declaration request.
7. The President reviews the request and determines whether the state and local governments will need federal assistance to recover from the disaster.
8. A disaster is declared.
9. When the request is approved, FEMA begins to support disaster response with funding, supplies and personnel.
