Veterans’ Exemption Programs

Standard Veterans’ Exemption (a $3,000 assessment reduction for real estate or motor vehicle)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicant must be veteran of the armed forces (i.e. the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard Air Force and Space Force), or activated member of any reserve component, including the Connecticut National Guard, serving under Title 10 or Title 32 of the United States Code
  • Must be honorably discharged
  • Active-duty service of 90 or more cumulative days in recognized periods of war (§ 27-103) is required, except for veteran with disability as determined by the Veterans Administration (Note: active duty for training is not considered as active duty for this benefit program)

How To Apply:

  • Record discharge paper (the long form of DD214) with the City of Stamford Town Clerk’s Office on or before September 30th, exemptions will begin to be applied to the real estate or motor vehicle tax bill starting in June of the succeeding year

 

Disabled Veterans

Veteran with a disability rating of at least 10% may submit award letter from the Veterans Administration to the Assessor’s Office by March 31st for increased benefit. No resubmission is required unless there is change to the disability rating.

(NEW) Veterans with Service-Connected Permanent and Total Disability Rating

(effective October 1, 2024 – exemption will be reflected in the tax bill due on July 1, 2025)

Veteran who served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Air Force, or Space Force with a service-connected permanent and total disability rating receives full exemption on either (1) the dwelling they own and live in as his or her primary residence or, (2) if the veteran does not own a dwelling, one motor vehicle he or she owns and keeps in this state.

To receive this new exemption on the tax bill due on July 1, 2025:

  1. Discharge paper (the long form of DD214) must be recorded with the City of Stamford Town Clerk’s Office on or before September 30th,2024 AND
  2. Award letter showing service-connected permanent and total disability rating must be submitted to the Assessor’s Office by March 31st, 2025. (Note: late filing is allowed under certain conditions)

Additional Veterans’ Exemption (City and State income-based programs)

Filing period: February 1 – October 1

Veteran entitled to the Standard Veterans’ Exemption may also be eligible for an Additional Veterans’ Exemption based on income requirements.

City of Stamford Local Program:

The income limits are $100,000 for single individuals or $120,000 for married couples

Required Income Documentation:

  • A copy of your prior year’s SOCIAL SECURITY STATEMENT (FORM SSA1099) If married, we will need both.
  • A copy of your prior year’s FEDERAL TAX RETURN (FORM 1040) IF YOU ARE REQUIRED TO FILE. (If there are Schedule 1 and/or Schedule E attached to Form 1040, we will need a copy as well.)
  • IF YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO FILE FEDERAL TAX RETURN, COPIES OF PROOFS OF INCOME FOR THE PRIOR YEAR (Including but not limited to wages, lottery winnings, taxable pensions, IRA’s, interest, dividends, net rental income, Federal Supplemental Security Income, State of Connecticut public assistance payments, General Assistance, veteran’s pensions, veteran’s disability payments, and any other income not listed above)

State of Connecticut Program:

Completed application forms and required income documentation must be submitted to the address below on or before October 1st to receive exemptions on the tax bills due on July 1st of the succeeding year.
