Totally Disabled Exemption

Under Connecticut General Statue 12-81(55), property owner, who is permanently and totally disabled, receives an $1,000 exemption off the assessment of the real estate or motor vehicle he or she owns.

The completed application and proof of disability* must be submitted to the following address below on or before January 31st to receive exemption on the tax bill due the following July 1.

*Proof of Disability needed based on the age of the applicant:

 For applicant under 65 years old:

Current disability award letter or benefit verification letter (TPQY) from Social Security Office. If applicant has not worked under social security, proof of permanent and total disability from a federal, state, municipal, or other government related program deemed comparable by the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management.

For applicant aged 65 or older:

The Physicians Certificate of Total and Permanent Disability filled out by the applicant’s primary doctor. No other proof of disability is required.
