Stamford Announces Annual Walk to Work Day

Post Date:04/08/2019 10:00 AM

Stamford will participate in Walk to Work Day on April 10, 2019, a nationwide day where residents and commuters are encouraged to walk at least 15 minutes on their way to work. City officials along with the Transportation, Traffic, and Parking Bureau will gather at the Stamford Transportation Center lower-level Concourse between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. to celebrate this public event with free coffee, snacks, safety education information and giveaways.

“We’re actively making Stamford a more accessible City,” said Mayor David Martin. “Walking reduces the number of cars on our roads, helps our environment, and allows residents to enjoy the nicer weather we’re getting.”

Stamford’s dense layout within close proximity to public transit, shops, parks and jobs makes walking for short trips easy. The City’s Street Smart Initiative supports projects that improve the experience of non-motorists throughout the city, especially along main transit corridors like Washington Boulevard. Stamford’s walkability has resulted in Downtown Stamford receiving a Walkscore of 94.

“National Walk to Work Day is a great way to encourage our residents and visitors that walking is a healthy part of everyday life,” said Jim Travers, Bureau Chief for Transportation, Traffic and Parking. “Safety continues to be our priority. By maintaining a pedestrian-safe City, we encourage people to make more trips without their cars and attract other methods of transportation such as walking, biking, or riding transit.”

The City of Stamford has steadily implemented a number of roadway improvements such as signal timing updates, and illuminated Yield to Pedestrian signs along Washington and Tresser Boulevard, a major multi-modal corridor connecting thousands of commuters to jobs every day.
