Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

 

Read below to learn more about initiatives my administration is working on, resources for Stamford residents, information about upcoming events, and important city and state information.

 

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  • $7.7 Million Dollar State Grant for Mill River Park State Grant: We have secured $7.7 million in state funding to complete the Community Commons at Mill River Park! This transformative project will bring a permanent event space, a dog park, and new play areas to the park, while also enhancing pedestrian safety along Washington Boulevard. Many thanks to our state delegation and the Mill River Park team for their strong partnership and advocacy!
  • $5 Million Dollar Federal Grant for Cummings and West Beach: I’m excited to announce that Cummings Park and West Beach have been awarded a $5 million grant from the National Park Service's Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP). This funding will support significant improvements at both Cummings Park and West Beach, enhancing these cherished outdoor spaces in Stamford.
  • Connecticut Gun Buyback Program: As part of a statewide effort, the Stamford Police Department is holding a gun buyback program on October 5th from 10:00am – 1:00pm at 725 Bedford Street. This initiative aims to reduce the number of unwanted firearms in our community, offering residents a safe and anonymous way to turn in firearms. I encourage everyone to spread the word to make certain we to make Stamford a safer place for all.

CITY NEWS

  • Stamford 2035: The City of Stamford is excited to announce the kickoff of the Stamford 2035 Comprehensive Plan, a once-in-a-decade opportunity to take stock of the state of the city and ask fundamental questions about our future! This plan will serve as North Star for Stamford's development through 2035, addressing key issues such as sustainability and resilience; diversity, equity, and inclusion; housing; economic development; mobility; and infrastructure. As part of the 10-month process, residents will be invited to share their vision for Stamford through upcoming public meetings, workshops, surveys, and conversations with our planning team.

  • Arts & Culture Guide: The City of Stamford and the Stamford Arts and Culture Commission are excited to announce, “Stamford Spotlight: A Celebration of Arts and Culture.” This guide highlights upcoming arts and cultural events in Stamford. Be sure to stop by and support our local organizations! Click here to view the September Guide.
  • Learning in Retirement: Learning in Retirement offers morning classes and trips in art, music, current events, history and technology to senior citizens and other retirees. Go to lirstamford.org to explore the classes and to register.
  • Parking Garage Demolition: The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) has initiated the demolition of the Stamford Transportation Center's 1985 Parking Garage and Pedestrian Bridge. For further details, click here.
  • Paving Update: Click here for the priority list for paving operations established in response to a city-wide road assessment in 2022.
  • Beach Passes Available for Purchase: Beach passes are now available for purchase online or in person. Parking permits are required at Cove Island, Cummings, West Beach, John J. Boccuzzi, Dorothy Heroy & Newman Mills Riverbank Walk Parks from May 1st through September 30th. Click here for more information and to purchase your pass.
  • Stamford Transportation Center Master Plan: Our administration has been meeting with the Connecticut Department of Transportation and city transportation officials to continue to make progress on the Stamford Train Station Master Plan.   • Scouting America helps all children perform better in school, teaches the value of volunteering, and builds the confidence needed for leadership roles. Our programs are family-focused, encouraging exploration and adventure. Join us to help your child grow, learn, and succeed! Boys and Girls aged 5-10 click here and aged 11-17 click here.

 

CITY EVENTS

  • 19th Annual Family Day: The Stamford Health Department will host their 19th Annual Family Day at the Yerwood Center (90 Fairfield Avenue) on Saturday, September 28th from 10 am to 2 pm. The event is free and open to the public, and there will be community resources, food, prizes, entertainment and other activities for families. The rain date is October 5th.

     

  • Reimagine Lathon Wider: We are thrilled to invite you to the public showing of the Reimagine Lathon Wider Architectural Competition! This transformative competition aims to create a visionary "Civic Campus" at the Lathon Wider Community Center, located in Stamford’s vibrant South End neighborhood. Join us at the Loft Artist Association Thursday October 3rd from 6-8 PM to view and celebrate the architectural designs submitted by talented individuals, all focused on reimagining this vital community space. From proposed innovative concepts to creative designs for the site, this is an exciting step toward enhancing the connection between the Lathon Wider Community Center and the surrounding neighborhood. Employment Opportunities in the City

  • Mill Road Bridge: The Mill Road bridge near Old Long Ridge Road is open to one lane vehicular traffic.  Residents can click herefor updates.

     

  • Lakeside Drive Bridge Replacement: Lakeside Drive Bridge is closed to all traffic, including cyclists and pedestrians. Residents are reminded to please stay away from the construction site for your own safety. There is only access to the Aquarion Water treatment plant provided pass Quarry Road. For detour plans and more information click here.
  • Cedar Heights Bridge Replacement: The Cedar Heights Bridge is currently closed and is scheduled to reopen to vehicular traffic in November of 2024.
  • West Glen Drive Bridge: West Glen Bridge is currently closed for replacement, and the anticipated completion date is 12/1/2024
  • Hunting Ridge Road Bridge Replacement: The Hunting Ridge Road Bridge is currently closed for replacement. A detour route is in effect until June 2025 with the scheduled project completion is June 2025. More information can be found here.
  • Connecticut Department of Transportation Stamford Station Construction: Construction continues at the Stamford Train Station, so please make sure to plan ahead. Passengers can find the updated train schedule here.
