Your City at Work: From the Mayor’s Desk

Read Mayor Simmons’ joint statement with Superintendent Dr. Tamu Lucero and Board of Education President Jackie Heftman regarding the Anti-Semitic Vandalism found at AITE High School:

“We are saddened to report that swastikas, the antisemitic symbol of hate, were painted on the AITE campus overnight. This vandalism – which is a hate crime – was discovered just before 7:00 am when staff reported to work. The incident has been reported to the Stamford Police Department, which is investigating.

We currently have no indication that this hate-filled vandalism was perpetrated by a member of our school community. Regardless, we want to emphatically and clearly state that hate speech, bullying, or the dissemination of any symbols associated with hate are not tolerated in Stamford Public Schools and the City of Stamford.

Everyone in our community deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and acceptance. If you have any information about this incident that would help in the investigation, please contact the Stamford Police Department.”

MAYOR’S UPDATES

  • Visit to Olympic Broadcasting Home at NBC Sports: I was proud to welcome Governor Lamont along with swimmer and Connecticut Native, Ali Truwit to NBC Sports as they broadcast the Summer Olympics right here in Stamford! Ali, a four-year letter winner for Yale’s swimming and diving team, lost part of her leg in a shark attack. Now, she’s preparing to compete in the Paralympic Games in Paris starting August 28th. Go Team USA!

  • West Side Walk: I enjoyed walking the West Side with community members and discussing how we are enhancing infrastructure and community spaces that include parks and sidewalks. Since taking office, we've secured $17 million for the West Side Connector Project to improve connectivity and $2.1 million for the West Main Street Corridor Planning Project to enhance pedestrian safety. We've also invested in tree planting, new picnic tables, and grills at Carwin Park and Jackie Robinson Park.
